Emergency Work Taught Me That Small Orders Are an Audition
I coordinate emergency production for an automotive metal parts supplier. We stamp, forge, extrude, and CNC machine parts, so my days do not look like a typical filter or converter shop. But what I've learned from more than 200 rush orders—maybe 240, I would need to check our tracker—is that order size tells you very little about how important a project is. A missing $300 bracket can stop a car just as fast as a missing $30,000 assembly.
Here is my position in plain terms: suppliers should treat small orders seriously, not because it is polite, but because it is the most realistic test of how they will behave under pressure. If you do not believe that, no amount of website copy about “quality and service” should convince you.
My First Mistake: Chasing Big Numbers and Hiding From Small Ones
I did not start with that opinion. In my early days, I wanted purchase orders with many zeros. A two-piece order felt like a distraction. I assumed our scheduler was right to delay small jobs until the production line had “free time.” That was wrong.
Then, on a Tuesday in March 2024, a local shop called with 36 hours until their customer's inspection date. They had a Subaru Legacy catalytic converter sitting on the shop floor, but the heat-shield mounting brackets had rusted open. They did not ask us for a converter. They asked for two laser-cut steel brackets, bent to factory dimensions, with holes where the heat shield's tabs would go. The total was about $430 and a $120 rush fee.
A strict minimum-order policy would have sent them away. We almost sent them away. Instead, we made the brackets in 36 hours and learned more about that customer's exact problems than any 20-page RFQ taught us that month. That shop called us again two months later, then again with steel production runs. The small order was not a distraction; it was a door.

Another example appears in almost every forum: Wix vs Mann oil filter. I don't sell oil filters, but I do work on stamped metal housings, and the comparison is about metal as much as filter media.
An oil filter housing is a stamped can. The base plate is stamped. The crimped seam must hold oil pressure, vibration, and heat cycles. When an owner's manual specifies an oil filter Mann or an “original equipment equivalent,” it is not only describing paper media. It is describing the steel case, the sealing surface, and the one-millimeter details that keep the gasket from dripping. Many engineers start with a filter's flow and filtration ratings, but the filter's outer shell can be just as important.
Does that mean Mann-Filter is always the right choice? Not necessarily. Wix has its own designs, and there are filters with a perfectly good housing under another label. But when a product is dismissed without looking at the metal, you are missing half the conversation. That same logic applies to a purchasing department that judges a supplier only by part weight or material cost.

I get strange urgent requests too. A customer once sent a drawing for a mounting flange for a 12V DC water pump and asked us to make one aluminum prototype. It was not a high-volume stamping job; it was a CNC machining job. We said yes, asked about the pump face and hose connections, and delivered a prototype in four days.
That same customer later asked how to wire a fuel pump to a toggle switch. The honest wiring answer involves a relay, an inline fuse, and a switch rated for the coil current, not the pump current. But the part that impressed the customer was when I asked where the fuel pump would be mounted and what it would be attached to. Someone can know how to wire a fuel pump to a toggle switch and still install the pump on a flimsy bracket that vibrates, cracks, and causes a fuel leak. The bracket is not a wiring problem, but it is a reliability problem.
The common thread is not voltage or engine type. It is that both requests came from people who needed a small solution and had been ignored by suppliers who only wanted larger orders. We did not act noble. We acted interested, and interest is rare enough to be a competitive advantage.
What I Learned From Internal Data
I am not saying everyone should take every tiny order even if it destroys their production schedule. Setup times are real. A stamping press that takes an hour to change a die cannot run five pieces for the same cost as a large run. But after we looked at our own emergency-order data in Q3 2024, the pattern was clear: the late jobs were rarely late because they were small or technically hard. They were late when nobody took ownership. A $500 order with an owner in the room ships on time. A $500 order that gets handed down until someone remembers it fails.
That is why I think small orders are a better supplier test than glossy quality manuals. They reveal who asks clarifying questions, who sets a realistic lead time, and who treats drawings with care. If a supplier acts annoyed when you ask for a 10-piece bracket, imagine what they will do when your 100,000-piece order has a problem.
So Go Ahead and Question the Minimum-Order Attitude
I can hear the pushback: “Our factory really does have minimums. Small jobs are not economically feasible.” Fine. That may be true, and I won't call every minimum order unethical. But there is a difference between an honest constraint and an attitude.
“We can make it, but the setup fee is $250 and delivery is Friday” is not a rejection.
“That's too small” said dismissively, is.
If a supplier cannot justify doing a small job, they should say so with a price and a date. That lets the customer decide. But treating small customers as unworthy is a bad long-term bet. Today's one-off may be next year's production part, especially in the automotive world where suppliers are often picked based on how they handle early validation orders.
My View After 200+ Rush Orders
I plan to keep taking small orders, and I plan to keep talking about them. Every time a custom job comes in—a filter housing, a Subaru Legacy catalytic converter bracket, a 12V DC water pump flange, a fuel pump wiring question—I ask the same thing: What does this part need to do, and when do you honestly need it?
That question has served me better than any sales pitch. The size of the purchase order does not tell me whether the project matters. The behavior after an order is accepted does. If I ever forget that, I hope one of those small customers calls me again and reminds me.
