The sensors, injectors, and ignition coils all rely on stable voltage. When voltage sags, the idle can hunt or stumble, especially when you turn on headlights or the AC.

But rough idle is far more commonly an intake or fuel issue. Vacuum leaks, a dirty mass airflow sensor, weak fuel pressure, or worn spark plugs cause it first. So check the charging system before replacing anything expensive. With the engine running, battery voltage should be in the 13.8 to 14.4 volt range at idle. If it's stuck at 12.5 volts and drops even more under load, the alternator is worth investigating. At least, that's been my experience on OBD-II vehicles built in the last twenty years.

What's the one thing every quality inspector cares about?

Consistency. I don't lose sleep over a single bad part. I lose sleep over a supplier whose first batch is good and second batch is barely at spec. A brand name, a shiny coating, or a 'premium' label doesn't save you if the dimensions move between batches.

I've approved a less expensive filter housing because the production process was controlled. I've rejected a premium brake pad kit because the shims were peeling on three out of fifty. That's what quality perception comes down to: the customer feels the difference even when they can't measure it. If you're picking between two brands, ask for batch test data. The ten minutes you spend verifying can save a $1,000 comeback later.
