If I had to summarize six years of purchasing decisions into one sentence: A good air filter for a Land Rover is a MANN-Filter, a shop thermostat should be a Honeywell T6, a replacement radiator should be a name-brand core like Modine, and if your front end clunks, check a sway bar link before you order a control arm. That sounds like a product list, but it is not. It is a ranking of what matters. But after a while you start to notice the pattern: every cheap part that fails has the same failure mode, and every OE-grade part that works just quietly continues to work.
My sample is probably different from yours. It is based on roughly 300 air filter replacements, 80 thermostat swaps, and maybe 60 suspension repairs. If you work on a different vehicle mix, your experience may be different. I will get into that at the end.

Let me rephrase what I said earlier: I would rather sell a $22 MANN-Filter air filter than a $10 filter that only lists dimensions. A car repair shop is also a building. In Q3 2024, I looked at our utility bill and found the overnight heating spike was coming from the office thermostat running the furnace at 21°C all night for four empty rooms. I installed a Honeywell T6 programmable thermostat (about $120 at Home Depot and other suppliers, January 2025) and set it to drop to 15°C from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. It cut our January gas bill by 17%. Not a huge number, but the thermostat paid for itself in less than two months.
According to ENERGY STAR (EnergyStar.gov, accessed January 2025), a properly programmed thermostat can save about 8% on heating and cooling in a typical American home. In a commercial shop with weekend warm-up cycles, the percentage can be higher. I don't want to overstate it. Our 17% was on a single month in a very cold week. Still, the T6 is one of the few non-vehicle parts I recommend without hesitation.
For anyone trying to decide between a Honeywell T6 and a basic dial thermostat: buy the T6 or another model with a clear schedule and a physical button. The T6 connects to Wi-Fi and has an app, but I have never used the app. The app is kind of a gimmick for us. The schedule mattered.
Modine Radiator: When the Core Is the Best Value
The most frustrating part of radiator replacement is the mark-up on assembled units. A radiator is just a core, two end tanks, and a drain cock. For our 2019 delivery van, the dealer assembly quote was $480. A local parts house offered a Modine radiator core for $238. We reused the existing fan shroud and mounts, transferred the end tanks, and the total material cost was $306. The Modine core matched the original dimensions exactly and has been on the van for fourteen months so far.
Wait, I should add a caveat: not every radiator can be rebuilt. If the end tanks or the mounting brackets are damaged, you need the complete assembly. And if you are not doing the work yourself, the labor cost to swap tanks can erase the savings. In our case, the shop was our own shop, so labor was already covered.
I can only speak to this one Modine application. For other vehicle lines, I would still check whether the failed part is the core or the plastic tank. If the tank is cracked, a core-only replacement is pointless. If the core is leaking at the seam, a Modine-style core is worth considering.
Sway Bar vs Control Arm: Diagnose the Clunk Before You Buy the Arm
Here is the counterintuitive part of my whole system: the cheapest repair is often the correct one, but only if you diagnose the part, not the price. When a customer comes in with a front-end clunk over speed bumps, a lot of shops immediately quote a control arm. That is a $150 to $450 part plus alignment. But the real culprit is often a sway bar link, which costs $18 to $40 and takes about 30 minutes on the lift.
The sway bar vs control arm question is not an either-or. Both can make noise, and both are wear items. The difference is how you test them. A sway bar link fails when you rock the bar by hand, and the link has play. A control arm bushing fails when you pry on the lower arm and the large bushing moves more than a few millimeters. If you replace a control arm and the clunk stays, you have just spent $400 on a sway bar problem. If you replace the sway bar link first and the clunk stays, you are out $25 and twenty minutes. That is not over-simplification. It is the logic behind our diagnostic order.
I almost approved a control arm on a 2017 Ford E-250 a few years ago. Glad I checked the sway bar link first. That alone saved the customer a $400 guess.
Small customer note: I know a lot of independent repair shops do not like calling a customer after diagnosing only the sway bar link, because the margin is small. I get why someone might want to sell the control arm. But if a supplier treats a small repair as worthless, that is exactly when a customer starts getting quotes elsewhere. In our shop, every job gets the same diagnostic care. Today's $25 bushing is tomorrow's $2,500 complete suspension job.
Where This Falls Apart: Boundaries and Exceptions
My experience is limited to domestic and European vehicles serviced in the United States, and to a shop with its own lift and a small team. If you are a mobile mechanic working from a van, or a dealer with a factory-standard warranty plan, the cost equation shifts. Buying a $20 online filter is fine if you can wait, but not okay when a customer is broken down on the interstate and the part has to come from the next town. All part prices above came from our normal supplier quotes in January 2025. They will change.
Also, I am not saying premium brands are always better. There are many good filters, thermostats, and radiators from companies we have never tried. My point is to use a decision rule: buy parts that cite an OE reference or a test standard, and avoid parts that only quote a price. That rule has saved us more money than any coupon code I have ever found.
And if a vendor tries to ignore you because your order is small, let them. Small orders are how good vendors earn larger ones. We started as a six-bay shop ordering $140 worth of filters. The vendors who took those calls still get our annual line. The ones who did not do not.
